Beauty by Kelsey: How to Make your Makeup Last All Summer

Hey y’all we’ve got a little something special for you today. We are notoriously bad at all things beauty so we’re going to be the last person to give you any advice. However, we have been blessed with an amazing friend, Kelsey, who quickly became our makeup guru. We have lost count of the number of times we have gone to Kelsey for the best mascara or to see if a primer is worth it. We got her to agree to be the You, Me & DC beauty consultant so you’ll be seeing her name show up every so often!
In the spirit of summer and because the Fourth of July is right around the corner, she’s sharing her best tips on making sure your look lasts through the summer heat! Nobody wants to spend time on a beautiful look only to have it melt off their face an hour or so later, right? Hopefully Kelsey’s tips and tricks will help you out!

Step One
Prime PRIME PRIME! Face primers come in a million varieties so all skin types have a primer that works just for them. Primers will give your face makeup something to “stick” to and give you a more even canvas to work with. You can explore them here, but I’ll give some recommendations for different skin types as well:
Normal/combination skin –  Smashbox Iconic Photo Finish Primer
Dry skin- Marc Jacobs Coconut Face Primer (this is a bit pricey but SO WORTH IT)
I also prime my eyes if I’m going to wear eyeshadow and I tend to use this Urban Decay one more than any others.

Step Two
Now that you have your skin prepped and primed, you’re ready for foundation. For the summer, use a lightweight tinted moisturizer so that nothing feels heavy on your skin while you’re out in the sun. A bonus would be finding one with SPF in it. Wrinkle & skin protection is no joke! My favorite is this one by Laura Mercier. I use the oil free one because I tend to be a bit on the oily side, but they have a normal version and an illuminating version for people who tend to be on the dry side! (Shannon Edit: I bought this tinted moisturizer at Kelsey’s suggestion and I seriously am never going back. It’s so amazing that I plan to buy it in another shade when I get home).

Step Three
A LIFE CHANGING tip is to set your face makeup with a translucent powder after foundation but before using any other powders such as blush, bronzer, or highlight. Not only is this going to make your skin look flawless, it will also make your makeup last longer and will give your powder blushes and bronzers a better, more blendable surface. There are two powders that I recommend, and I love them both equally! This one by Laura Mercier is better for oily or combination skin, and this Cover FX one is better for more dry skin.

Step Four
Finally, set your face with a setting spray! I’ve been obsessed with Urban Decay’s setting sprays since my makeup obsession began and I use this one every day. It seems expensive at first, but mine has lasted for well over a year. However I also love this new hydrating spray from Tarte’s skincare line – I wouldn’t recommend this for my oily gals though! It does smell absolutely amazing though and I spray it on my face even when I don’t plan on wearing makeup that day. Setting sprays do this amazing compacting thing where they smoosh all the layers of makeup down onto your skin and hold everything in place – magical, right?

I hope this helps! Comment with questions or suggestions below! I’m more than happy to talk about makeup all day every day 🙂 –Kelsey
